American flight controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and other issues.

Over 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a lack of employees - among the peak after the closure began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency advised passengers in California to consult airlines about revised flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest periods to fly in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including pilot training.

It led several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.
