The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
