A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
