Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
