Plans for Putin-Trump Meeting Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to meet Russian President Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has stated.

This past week Trump stated he and the Kremlin leader would meet in Budapest in the coming fortnight to address the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The White House did not share further information on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting during a call with Putin, a just prior to hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "heated exchange", with insiders claiming the president had pushed him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

Yet, on this week the American president supported a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and European leaders to halt the conflict on the current front line.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Russia has repeatedly pushed back against pausing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "long-term, sustainable peace", Russia's foreign minister commented on this week, indicating that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the war needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Ukraine and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president commented discussions about the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He also said the only topic that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Weapons Discussions

Putin's spontaneous discussion with the US leader last Thursday preceded rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukraine that could theoretically target inside Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had proven to be a "significant input" in diplomacy", he remarked.
