The Gory Animated Film Ending That Haunts Fans
Among every adult-oriented animated films I’ve ever watched, nothing has lingered in my mind quite like the dread-soaked finale of the graphically gory and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director developed a grim, bleak , often savage universe with a few small , desolate glimmers of optimism.
While Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from a drive to expand animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was actually a try to communicate a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the mutual source of every conflict.”
That message is expressed via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously inspired by a well-known series of cuddly figures.
Growing up in a society centered on militarism and the defense industry, numerous these creatures are consumed by slaughtering unicorns, due to a religious scripture which states them they previously were masters of the forest, until the horned beings expelled them.
Others did not entirely bought into the brainwashing, , would rather sample narcotics or fornicate in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these vivid animals display sexual organs , definite libidos.
For one notably brutal, skeptical animal, Bluey, the battle with the unicorns becomes a route toward dominance — and especially to authority over his softer, nicer brother Tubby.
This bear is a bully , a seeming antisocial figure , and when fear takes over his unit and takes his comrades one by one, he seizes increasingly influence personally, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, as an expanding, harmful creature in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it feels like a comedy,” the director stated. “Yet it becomes a more dramatic and sad film. And ultimately, it’s a scary feature.”
The Unicorn Wars starts out resembling one of the most quirky features by an iconic animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in allowing drawn beings swear, shoot each other, or engage sexually.
Afterward it evolves into more akin to a darker work by that same creator, with increasingly explicit brutality and a palpable link to genuine suffering of conflict.
In the finale, it is a complete Grand Guignol carnage.
The fear that makes the film a perfect Halloween watch kicks in much sooner than indicated.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted lovers of violence, for fans of intense movies who wish to view something they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and can endure a plot which delivers absolutely no punches.
Watch it with the lights off without any distractions, and that ending will crawl into your mind and stay with you.
