What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.
Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
